Join us as I share the highlights of our unforgettable journey, a month-long adventure.

Road tripping through Europe has become an annual tradition that I eagerly anticipate every year. Last year, my adventure mostly involved flying, taking the train, and a bit of driving. However, this year, I decided to embark on a journey purely by car, and it has been an experience like no other. As I reflect on my recent road trip and eagerly look forward to planning the next one, I can't help but share the joys and benefits of exploring Europe from the open road.

Last Year's Multimodal Adventure

Before delving into my recent road trip, let's revisit the experience of last year. It was a whirlwind adventure that took me through various transportation modes. I hopped on planes to explore Italy, took scenic train rides through Germany, and indulged in some road tripping in Poland. Each leg of the journey had its unique charm, and I was able to explore diverse landscapes and cultures in a short span.

This combination of transportation methods allowed me to discover a huge part of Europe , however, it also came with its share of limitations. Timetables, ticket bookings, and the hustle and bustle of busy transportation hubs sometimes made the experience less spontaneous. Don't get me wrong; I cherished every moment of last year's adventure, but this year, I yearned for a different kind of freedom.

This Year's Pure Road Trip Experience

For this year's adventure, I decided to fully embrace the freedom of the open road. I packed my bags, loaded up the car, and hit the highways with a sense of excitement and anticipation. The decision to go purely by car allowed me to set my own pace, take detours on a whim, and truly immerse myself in the beauty of Europe's countryside.

The benefits of a road trip by car were immediately evident. I could stop whenever I wanted to capture a stunning view or explore a quaint village that caught my eye. I had the freedom to change my route, extend my stay in charming towns, and delve deeper into local culture and cuisine. It felt like I was in control of my own adventure, and that sense of independence was incredibly liberating.

One of the most pleasant surprises of my car-only road trip was the significant cost savings. While there are initial expenses associated with car ownership and maintenance, the overall trip cost was notably lower compared to previous journeys that involved flights and trains.

Here are some ways I saved money:

1. Transportation Costs: No airline tickets or train fares meant substantial savings right off the bat.

2. Accommodation Flexibility: With a car, I could opt for budget-friendly accommodations slightly off the beaten path, which were often more affordable and equally charming. Camping or even sleeping in the car. đŸ™‚

3.Food and Dining
: Having the flexibility to cook my meals at camping sites.

4. Entertainment: Many natural attractions and hiking trails are free or low-cost, making it easier to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without breaking the bank.
5. Reduced Baggage Fees: No more worries about checked baggage fees or restrictions on the amount of luggage I could bring.

Here are some extra costs:

The thrill of exploring multiple countries, cultures, and landscapes in one journey is truly enticing. However, it's essential to be well-prepared and aware of the costs involved to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. In this blog post, I'll break down the expenses you can expect when road tripping from the UK to Europe.

  1. Ferry or Eurotunnel Fees:
    • One of the first costs you'll encounter when traveling from the UK to mainland Europe is the ferry or Eurotunnel fees.
The price can vary based on the route, the time of day, and the size of your vehicle. It's advisable to book your crossing in advance to secure the best rates.
I paid 50£ for one way via P&O ferries. Travel time 1.5 hrs.
  2. Tolls and Vignettes:
    • As you drive through different European countries, you'll likely encounter toll roads. These fees can add up, so it's a good idea to research the toll systems of the countries on your route and budget accordingly. Some countries also require you to purchase a vignette, which is a permit allowing you to use their highways. Like, Hungary.
  3. Fuel Costs:
    • Fuel prices in Europe can vary significantly from one country to another. Be sure to check current fuel prices and calculate your estimated fuel expenses based on your route. Consider using fuel-efficient driving techniques to maximize mileage.
From Manchester, UK - To our final destination  Hungary our fuel cost came to 171 £.
  4. Accommodation:
    • Accommodation costs can vary widely depending on your preferences. Options range from camping and budget hostels to mid-range hotels and luxury resorts. Planning your accommodations in advance and booking in advance can help you secure the best deals.
I'm extremely grateful as I was able to work with some amazing hotels along the way, meaning I could save money on accommodation. We also often slept in the car and even at a camping site.
  5. Food and Dining:
    • Food expenses can also vary, but European cuisine is diverse and delicious. You can save money by dining at local restaurants and markets rather than exclusively eating at touristy spots. Cooking your meals when camping can also be cost-effective.
  6. Activities and Attractions:
    • Europe is brimming with attractions, museums, and activities. Research the places you want to visit and their entrance fees in advance. Consider purchasing city cards or attraction passes if they offer discounts on multiple sites.
  7. Travel Insurance:
    • It's crucial to have adequate travel insurance that covers you in case of accidents, medical emergencies, or unforeseen circumstances. While this isn't an upfront cost for the road trip, it's an essential expense for peace of mind.
  8. Vehicle Maintenance:
    • Before embarking on a long road trip, ensure your vehicle is in good condition. Consider a thorough checkup, oil change, and other necessary maintenance to minimize the risk of breakdowns on the road.
I also recommend to purchase the EU road kit as this is a requirement when you drive in Europe.
We got our oil, air filter and even the tyres changed before our trip. Cost 250£.
  9. Currency Exchange Fees:
    • When crossing borders and using different currencies, be mindful of currency exchange fees. It's wise to exchange some currency in advance or use a travel card with favorable rates. Like Monzo.
  10. Parking and City Charges:

    • In major European cities, parking fees and congestion charges may apply, but there are also a lot more FREE parking slots than in the UK.
Research parking options and understand local regulations to avoid unexpected expenses.

The map

Our journey began in the UK, at the iconic Dover Port, where we boarded a ferry, and from there, we explored the treasures of Europe.
Join us as we recount our unforgettable road trip through several Eu countries, discovering historical sites, charming villages, and picturesque lakes along the way. I will be releasing episodes from our trip via my Youtube channel weekly.

Chapter 1: A Historic Encounter in Dunkirk

Our first stop after arriving in France was the port city of Dunkirk. This place, etched in history due to its pivotal role in World War II, was a humbling experience. We visited  the beaches where the famous evacuation took place, paying our respects to the bravery of those who were part of the Dunkirk evacuation. The town's resilience and transformation since the war were truly inspiring.

Chapter 2: Belgian Beauty in Bruges and Brussels

From France, we made our way to the enchanting city of Bruges in Belgium. Known as the "Venice of the North," Bruges captured our hearts with its picturesque canals, medieval architecture, and delectable chocolates. Wandering through the cobblestone streets, we explored historic squares and admired the intricate details of its buildings.

Our next destination was the bustling capital of Belgium, Brussels.
The blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy made Brussels a captivating stop on our journey.

Chapter 3: Embracing Dutch Tranquility

As we crossed into the Netherlands, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and headed to a small village nestled in the Dutch countryside. The idyllic setting allowed us to slow down and soak in the serenity of Dutch life.
This tranquil interlude was a welcome contrast to our city adventures.

Chapter 4: German Delights: Lakes and Villages

Germany was a revelation of stunning lakes, enchanting small villages, and historic castles. We couldn't resist the allure of destinations like Lake Eibsee and the Bavarian Alps. The shimmering waters and dramatic landscapes provided the perfect backdrop for our journey. As we explored small villages and toured castles, we felt like we were living in a fairy tale.

Chapter 5: Swiss Delights: The Appenzeller Cheese Factory

Switzerland was next on our list, and we had a delectable reason to visit—the famous Appenzeller cheese factory.
The scent of cheese hung in the air as we marveled at the cheese-making process.
Sampling a variety of cheeses, we left with a newfound appreciation for this Swiss delicacy.

Chapter 6: Conquering Fears in the Dolomites

The Dolomites in Italy beckoned with their rugged beauty, and for me, there was a personal challenge to conquer—the iconic rowboats of Pragser Wildsee. Overcoming my fear of boats, we embarked on an unforgettable journey across the crystal-clear waters of Lago di Braies.
The view of the majestic Dolomites mirrored in the lake was a sight to behold and a true bucket list moment.

Chapter 7: Slovenia's Natural Beauty and a First-Time Camping Experience

Our adventure continued into Slovenia, where we camped for the very first time near the world-famous Lake Bled.
The pristine waters and the picturesque island in the middle of the lake were a sight to behold.

Chapter 8: The Grand Finale in Hungary: Budapest's Iconic Landmarks

As our road trip neared its conclusion, we arrived in Hungary, a country rich in history and culture. Our final destination was the captivating capital city, Budapest, where we couldn't wait to explore its iconic landmarks.

First on our list was the Hungarian Parliament Building, a masterpiece of neo-Gothic architecture that stands proudly on the banks of the Danube River.

Next, we ventured to the Fisherman's Bastion, a fairytale-like terrace perched high on the Buda Castle hill. With its fairy tale-like towers and panoramic views of the city, it felt like stepping into a storybook. We wandered along the ornate balconies, admiring the stunning vistas of the Danube River and the Pest side of the city.

Our European road trip had one final, heartwarming chapter to unfold. As our journey came to an end in Hungary, we were fortunate to have the chance to reunite with family. One of my brother lives on the outskirts of Budapest, making it the perfect place to conclude our adventure.

The time spent with family was priceless. We laughed, reminisced, and created new memories together. It was a beautiful reminder of the importance of connecting with loved ones, especially after a long journey that had taken us far from home.

Chapter 9:Visiting My Parents

Our journey had come full circle as we ventured to visit my parents, who also resided in Hungary. Being reunited with them was a deeply emotional moment, and it added a sentimental touch to our road trip.
We shared stories of our travels, laughed about our adventures, and savored homemade meals that brought a taste of comfort and nostalgia.

Our European road trip from the UK to Hungary was more than just a journey through stunning landscapes and cultural treasures. It was a personal odyssey, filled with challenges, triumphs, and memorable experiences.
