Trick or treat, Halloween is around the corner and whilst I was born in a country that doesn't celebrate this time of the year as here in the UK, I definitely love the idea of decorating the house, cookies, carving pumpkins and dressing up in all sort of spooky costumes.
I was born in Hungary as many of you might know, where there is no special traditions connected to Halloween.
When I was younger carving pumpkins and having costume parties has become quite popular trick or treating is definitely not something you will ever see in Hungary.
Traditionally end of October and the beginning of November considered a time of quiet commemoration.
1 st of November is ALL HALLOWS’ DAY : When masses in church are held in commemoration, and families often visit the graves of relatives.
2nd of November is ALL SOULS’ DAY : Similar to the day before, families visit cemeteries and tidy the graves of their loved ones.
As you can tell is a very different tradition than Halloween.
So now that you all learnt (maybe ) something knew, let's get to the reason why you all here, the recipe.
This was actually my first time making a sugar cookie and I can honestly say it's one of the softest and easiest dough I have ever worked with.
This dough does not require to be chilled overnight, this is also why this is one of the reasons this is such an easy recipe.
I used this royal icing recipe from BBC but you can find many others over google. I found this easy and only needs a few ingredients.
Ingredients
226 grams unsalted butter
200 grams granulated white sugar
360 grams plain flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
2) Whilst the oven is getting ready in a bowl, I used my kitchen aid mixer bowl add the butter and sugar. Beat it until it's nice and smooth. Tip : use room
temperature butter.3) Add the extracts and the egg into the mixer bowl and keep mixing.
4) In a separate bowl, combine baking powder and salt with the flour. Add a little at a time to the wet ingredients so it won't get clumps.
5) Now the dough should be ready. Turn out your dough onto a countertop , flour your surface and finish the kneading the dough by hand.
Keep in mind : Your dough is ready to roll if it's pulling away from the side of the bowl.
6) Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for about 6-8 mins. Let the cookies cool down before decorating.
I hope you enjoy the recipe! Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your comments!
